Solo Travelling Tips and Tricks – Preparation for the Monaco ePrix
With just one month to go until the Monaco ePrix, my preparations for another solo adventure are well underway. Having travelled alone extensively, I feel privileged to draw on a wealth of experience—though this will be my first visit to the principality of Monaco.
As a female-presenting solo traveller, I am often asked whether I feel afraid to explore new destinations alone, especially those in different countries. My answer is usually a confident "No, I am not scared." For the most part, this is true. However, solo travel is not without its challenges. There have been moments of uncertainty—being stuck at a train station unsure of my next step, or dealing with stolen belongings. But careful preparation minimises these challenges and helps ensure a smooth experience.
One key aspect of my travel preparation is ensuring I can ask for help when needed. Choosing destinations where I speak the language has been immensely beneficial. Thanks to school and personal motivation, I have worked towards being as fluent as possible in my second and third language, which has made navigating unfamiliar places far easier.
Another crucial element of my solo travel strategy is opting for flexible transportation options rather than fixed ones. Since I predominantly travel by train, I have become accustomed to handling delays—especially given that German trains, contrary to their stereotype, are usually late.
Longer layovers between trains are always preferable to short, high-risk connections. A 30-50 minute layover allows time for a coffee and a snack while ensuring a delayed connection does not derail the entire journey. Additionally, investing in a flexible ticket that allows for changes without requiring a new purchase is invaluable. While these tickets may be slightly more expensive, the reduced stress and increased adaptability are well worth it. My preferred option is usually an Interrail ticket, which offers excellent flexibility across multiple countries.
To safeguard against loss or theft, I always have photocopies of essential documents, including my passport, insurance details, and travel tickets. Having these backups ensures I can still access important information and present them to authorities if necessary.
After experiencing a stolen wallet while travelling in Belgium, I learned a valuable lesson: even with blocked cards, mobile payment services can still function. This allowed me to purchase bus tickets and food while awaiting new cards—a tip that could be a lifesaver in similar situations.
Additionally, I have since adopted the habit of carrying only the necessary documents and cards, leaving all non-essential items at home. A small, secure wallet stored in a zipped compartment within my backpack adds an extra layer of protection. Avoiding easily accessible storage areas significantly reduces the risk of theft.
Researching transport routes in advance is another strategy I use to make my trips as stress-free as possible. My mind tends to go a million miles an hour, often preventing me from sleeping or focusing due to last-minute thoughts and concerns. Familiarising myself with key connections and travel logistics ahead of time helps to ease this anxiety.
Finally, knowing that I can ask for help when needed provides additional reassurance. Solo travel, while empowering, does not mean facing every challenge alone. A willingness and ability to seek assistance can make a significant difference in navigating new environments with confidence. And, who knows, may even lead to new connections.
Speaking of connections: making connections with locals can be helpful when it comes to getting insider tips for your destination. In the past, I have enjoyed some lovely moments with the hosts of my accommodations. Even went on little trips around town, to markets and museums with them. Booking an accommodation with a private person rather than a hotel can make connecting with locals much easier.
No matter if you are also heading to Monaco for the ePrix or embarking on a completely different solo journey, I hope you truly enjoy yourself. Perhaps some of these tips have helped you feel more confident and prepared for your next adventure. Wishing you safe and exciting travels!
